18-The Last of the Many
Written by Stephen Grenfell
Series edited and produced by Alan Burgess
On January 25, 1957, a six-foot-long German magnetic mine was discovered in London's West India Dock where it had lain since the wartime raids on the capital. If the i,6oo-lb. mine had exploded it could have wrecked the dock wall and nearby cranes, and been a source of danger to people living in flats some hundreds of yards away. A Royal Naval team was called in to deal with the mine—one of the most dangerous invented by the Germans -and tonight's programme dramatises the difficult and perilous task these officers and men had to tackle.
