The film tells a true story. In 1932 Joseph Majczek was given a ninety-nine years sentence for the murder of a Chicago policeman. Thirteen years later he was released and given a cheque (or twenty-four thousand dollars for wrongful imprisonment. His innocence was established by P. J. McNeal. a newspaper reporter who followed up a mysterious advertisement in the personal columns of the Chicago Times which ended ' Call Northside 777 '
