Decathlete DALEY THOMPSON wins Britain's first gold medal and STEVE CRAM beats the world's best over 1500 metres. Triple gold-medallist CARL LEWIS of the United States relives memories of JESSE OWENS.
At home: FATIMA WHITBREAD, in the javelin, becomes only the second British woman to win a European Cup final and there are victories for ALLAN WELLS over 200 metres, STEVE CRAM and the 4 x 400 metres relay team.
Cricket: KAPIL DEV leads India to a shock victory in the World Cup and England, led by BOB WILLIS , beat New Zealand.
Football: Aberdeen lift the Cup Winners' Cup for Scotland and in England there's success for Manchester United and Liverpool but the home countries struggle in the European Championship.
Tennis:Martinanavratilovadominates the world scene and retains her title at Wimbledon, where JOHN MCENROE beats a virtual unknown to regain his crown.
Yachting: The UNITED STATES are beaten-the Americas Cup goes to AUSTRALIA.
Golf: TOM WATSON wins his fifth Open Championship, NICK FALDO tops the European circuit and the Ryder Cup is a cliff-hanger.
Boxing: CHARLIE MAGRI , COLIN JONES ' and TONY SIBSON all tilt at world titles. FRANK BRUNO overpowers the heavyweights.
Horse Racing: JENNY PITMAN is the heroine of Aintree, LESTER PIGGOTT wins his ninth Derby but WILLIE CARSON is the champion.
Snooker: CLIFF THORBURN scores a maximum break but STEVE DAVIS regains the World Championship.
Rugby Union: IRELAND and FRANCE share the championship while in Rugby League FEATHERSTONE ROVERS lift the Challenge Cup.
British World Champions include JAYNE TORVILL and CHRISTOPHER DEAN in ice dancing and KEITH DELLER in darts.
