During the last three years there have been important advances in our knowledge of the most transient forms of matter yet discovered-the mesons. Professor Powell describes the behaviour of these fundamental particles and their relation to the cosmic rays that enter the earth's atmosphere from outer space, and outlines some of the problems still unsolved.
