Performance on 3

on BBC Radio 3

Live from the Barbican Hall, London, Colin Davis and the London Symphony Orchestra continue their epic odyssey through the music of Berlioz with a performance of his "dramatic symphony" Romeo and Juliet. Inspired by Shakespeare's famous tragedy, this vast work is a cross between an opera, a cantata and a symphony, in which the doomed lovers are represented not by the solo singers but by the orchestra itself. For Berlioz, that was the most powerful way to express their sublime passion.

Daniela Barcellona (mezzo), Kenneth Tarver (tenor), Orlin Anastassov (bass), London Symphony Chorus and Orchestra, conductor Colin Davis
