The Monday Film: Catch 22

on BBC One London

starring
1944: An American Air Force base somewhere in the Mediterranean. Shaken by the agonised death of a young gunner and by the increasing number of bombing raids, Capt Yossarian finds himself surrounded by encroaching insanity and constant death. He asks to be certified as mentally unfit to fly -but then learns about Catch 22. Since no sane person would want to fly, asking to be grounded suggests sanity. He must continue the missions. This mordantly black comedy about World War II features an all-star cast in an ambitious adaptation of a modern literary classic.
