Massenet's opera, based on Abbe Prevost 's sensational novel of 1728, tells the tragic love story of the young Chevalier des Grieux and the beautiful but fickle
Manon, whose restless pursu it of pleasure and amusement takes her from the dizzy heights of first love to jealousy, betrayal and degradation. Even a final reconciliation with des Grieux comes too late to save her and she dies in her lover's arms.
