- an introduction to political thought
Seven programmes presented by Brian Redhead
5: Rousseau and Smith Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712-78) was probably the most profound and certainly the most influential political thinker of the 18th century. No other figure of the Enlightenment was credited with more original, or more dangerous, views. Adam Smith (1723-90) is famous as the founder of the modern science of economics, but there was an important political dimension to his thought which survived to inspire and provoke both Mill and Marx in the 19th century. With BRIAN REDHEAD are
Dr Robert Wokler of the University of Manchester and Dr John Robertson of St Hugh's College, Oxford.
