Final Years and Exile, 1938-1945 With the increasing Nazi domination of Central Europe in 1938 and 1939, Bartok realised that it would be impossible for him to remain long in Hungary with any hope of pursuing his work. He was forced into exite first to Switzerland and finally to America, where he ended his days. This was a period of great spiritual sadness for him; yet at the same time he produced some of his greatest works.
