The last of a six-part exploration of university life today. 6: The Graduates
Graduation Day at Edinburgh turns the McEwan Hall into a kaleidoscope of colour. Every year 2,000 students receive their degree scrolls from the Vice-Chancellor and Principal. Their courses are over: their careers about to begin. Yet six months later one in nine of them will still be out of work. Others will have had to settle for jobs well below their expectations. Bob wishes he had learned a trade instead. Ian feels like ' smashing every window I see'. With so many students graduating on to the dole, should universities be changing their courses? Should fewer people be sitting for degrees? Do universities equip people for work - or for life?
