Symphony No. 25, in G minor
(K.183)
1 Allegro con brio. 2 Andante. 3 Minuetto. 4 Finale : Allegro
Mozart's Symphony No. 25 in G minor (KI83), probably written at Salzburg in 1773 or 1774, is usually known as ' the little G minor' to distinguish it from the ' great' G minor (K.550). Like the latter, and like so many of Mozart's other compositions in the same key (e.g., the Piano Quartet, K.478, and the String Quintet, KSI6), K.183 is fiery and passionate, almost tragic, in character. It is, in fact, outstanding among Mozart's earlier symphonies.
The Symphony is scored for two oboes, four horns, and strings, though the second pair of horns is replaced by two bassoons in the second movement and the trio of the third.
