1863. The Yankees are badly placed at Vicksburg, so Colonel Marlowe is sent with a single cavalry brigade to cut the railway supply line, 300 miles into Confederate country. Marlowe is irked by the inclusion of an army surgeon, Major Kendall, under his command and animosity between the two men deepens when Hannah, a Southern belle, is taken prisoner.
