Opera on 3: The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant

on BBC Radio 3

Stephanie Hughes introduces Gerald Barry's new opera, based on the play by Rainer Werner Fassbinder, exploring the tortured connections between desire and power. Fashion designer Petra falls passionately in love with Karin, a beautiful, ambitious young woman. Watching over everything, but never uttering a word, is the enigmatic Marianne, whom Petra takes every opportunity to humiliate.
