The Richard Dimbleby Lecture

on BBC One London

Sir Denis Forman , Deputy Chairman Granada Group, gives the 15th in this series of annual lectures before an invited audience at the Royal Society of Arts in London.
British Television - Who Are the Masters Now?
There is revolution on the horizon for British television. That is the message delivered in tonight's lecture by Sir
Denis Forman. As Chairman of Granada TV he brought
Brideshead Revisited and The Jewel in the Crown to your screens. Now he surveys the state of the television industry and he finds it vulnerable.
Sir Denis argues that our television is under threat - from increasing political interference, from a vociferous minority concerned about obscenity, and from the current belief that the forces of the market place can solve all the problems of television. You, the viewer, may well be the loser, he warns. Sir Denis makes his own proposals for the future of British television - proposals which would put the viewer first. Introduced by Michael Checkland
