In 1923, Mustafa Kemal, Ataturk, became the first President of the Turkish Republic and embarked on a far-reaching policy of secularisation. How successful was it? What effect has it had on the influence of Islam in Turkish society?
In July 1977, Dr Geoffrey Lewis, Senior Lecturer in Turkish at the University of Oxford, revisited Turkey to seek an answer to these questions. In this programme, with contributions from a number of Turkish intellectuals and scholars, he examines the impact of Ataturk's reforms, assesses their consequences after more than 50 years, and reflects on the present and future role of Islam in modern Turkey.
