on BBC One London

Kath receives an unexpected proposal.

Medical Drama: Holby City 8.00pm BBC1
There's the distinct smell of death permeating the wards tonight, as the beds are heaving with likely candidates. Jo's life hangs in the balance after taking an Ecstasy tablet that turns out to have been impure, and her teenage daughter labels her "a rubbish mum". Middle-aged Bob needs his veins unclogged or he could lose a foot; his wife Shirley (Michele Dotrice of Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em) lovingly reproaches him for delaying it so long. Bob is convinced that people die in hospital - and as he's in Holby City, he's got a point. Closer to home, there's Lisa's dad, Terry (Miles Anderson). Just when he's plucked up the courage to ask Kath (Jan Pearson) to marry him, Ric (Hugh Quarshie) delivers devastating news.
And bad penny Marty (Tom McGovern) turns up again to see his brother Tom (Denis Lawson), although this time it appears to be to say goodbye.
With so many trials, it's a relief to get into the relative calm of the operating theatre. But even there, Ed (Rocky Marshall) and Tom discuss Marty rather than concentrating on their incisions. It's no wonder so many patients don't get out alive. As the grim reaper gets stuck in, Tom makes a horrifying discovery about his brother that suddenly makes him see the light. About time. (Nuala Giblin)
