D. H. Lawrence condemned Freud for his 'irreverent' approach to the Unconscious: a 'fearfully religious man
(as Lawrence once described himself) could scarcely tolerate ' a technology ot the heart.' Nevertheless, Professor Rieff suggests, Lawrence's 'ethic of honesty' brought him closer to Freud than he realised.
