TWO HONEST MEN

on Third Programme

by Philip Rieff
Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of California,
Berkeley
D. H. Lawrence condemned Freud for his 'irreverent' approach to the Unconscious: a 'fearfully religious man
(as Lawrence once described himself) could scarcely tolerate ' a technology ot the heart.' Nevertheless, Professor Rieff suggests, Lawrence's 'ethic of honesty' brought him closer to Freud than he realised.
