Petula Clark

on BBC Radio 2

1/4. A rare treat for fans of singer, actress and songwriter Petula Clark.
In four shows, compiled from a 20-hour weekend chat with her old friend Desmond Carrington at his home in Scotland, Clark talks candidly about her personal life and her formidable seven-decade-long career. Born in 1932, she had her own radio series by 1943 and a movie career a year later. She was a star of early television and has had notable success in West End and Broadway musicals. But her legacy rests primarily in the musical recordings, of which there are over a thousand, many of them in French, Italian and German. And only a handful of 20th-century pop records are as recognised, loved and singable as her 1964 single Downtown. This first edition recalls Clark's successes as a child star and as a teenage actress.
