A programme for children under five
A. F. Clement 's story, ' The Little Car's Accident,' to be told again today by Julia Lang, is a favourite with our mechanically-minded under fives, and it has, indeed, much to commend it to them. There is the little car itself, and the big lorry, and the large car which causes all the trouble, and - very exciting! - the police car. Looked at more closely, however, this tale is seen as a tiny allegory, and the characters, though ostensibly belonging to the world of mechanical creations, represent types of human beings. No doubt our listeners will identify themselves with the little car; in the large one they may recognise the rough older boy from whom they may have suffered; in the lorry, the sympathetic, reliable friend, and, in the police car, the authoritative grown-up. They will appreciate, too, the lesson in good manners inherent in the tale.
Julia Lang's second story, ' Pickle, Prue, and Old Man Juniper,' by Ann Elliott, comes on Thursday; while tomorrow, Wednesday, and Friday bring Dorothy Smith with ' Lucy's New Dress,' by Frances Roper, ' Christopher visits Grand-mother,' by Joan E. Cass , and ' Five Candles,' by Miss N. Collins. Catherine Edwards introduces our programmes this week and next. Elizabeth A. Taylor
