Based on actual events, Ealing Studios' tribute to the Merchant Navy details the heroic recovery of the tanker San Demetrio by her crew. In November 1940,
900 miles from Britain and carrying 12,000 tons of petrol, the vessel was shelled by a German battleship and caught fire.
