Pettifer in America: The Turn of the Screwed

on BBC One London

'Don't get sick in America' runs the warning. Even if you have health insurance you can be bankrupted by a major illness.
It's all part of America's health crisis - the current preoccupation of a remarkable man, Herbert S. Denenberg, Insurance Commissioner for the State of ennsylvania. 'The consumer has been screwed long enough,' says Denenberg, 'now it's the Turn of the Screwed'.
It's a creed that has made Denenberg into a national figure as he has successfully attacked - and antagonised - lawyers, polluters, car makers. Now he's taking on what he calls the biggest of the 'consumer frauds' - the mighty forces of American medicine.
