Today is the 75th birthday of this celebrated Canadian composer, pianist and band leader. In the first of eight programmes Max Harrison looks at the early influences on Evans and at his work as an arranger for Claude Thornhill and his Orchestra in the early
1940s. Among Evans's creations are La paloma, Le troubadour and Arab Dance.
