Tod Dawson is a 10-year-old with a mind of his own. His father is glad to off-load him onto a local schoolteacher, Stephen Leigh , while he goes abroad. He returns with an American wife and regains custody of the child, but his promise of a stable home is never realised and, instead, violence erupts.
