In 1861, a tidal wave overwhelmed Last
Island, a Creole society holiday resort in the Louisiana Bayou. Hearn, best known for his translations from the Japanese, worked for a time as a reporter in New Orleans and became fascinated by this event. Chita is his only dramatic novel.
