Lord Novgorod the Great

on BBC Radio 3

by COLIN NEARS
Novgorod, about 100 km from Leningrad, is one of the birth-places of Russian civilisation, centre of an independent republicanism until taken over by the princes of Moscow in the 15th century. Its fabric, almost wholly destroyed in the second world war, has been restored to near its ancient splendour. Colin Nears tells how it felt to film there.
(His film, The Invasion of Space, Omnibus, Easter Day BBC1) followed by an interlude
