This programme is the first of a series showing the history and associations of some of the churches and cathedrals of this country. It is fitting that the series should begin with Westminster Abbey. The Island of Thorney in the Thames, where Westminster Abbey now stands, has been a holy place beyond the memory of man, and since its consecration in the time of Edward the Confessor, Westminster Abbey has been a national symbol. The programme traces the Abbey's history and shows how closely it has been linked with the history of our people, from the events of many centuries ago to the Coronation of King George VI on May 12 of. this year.
Lawrence E. Tanner , the author of this programme, is Keeper of the Muniments of Westminster Abbey, and has an unrivalled knowledge of the subject.
