Despite press calls for "the elimination of light music", jazz was very popular in the Soviet Union in the thirties. Inspired by the Tea-Jazz Ensemble of Odessa, Shostakovich's Jazz Suite No 1 includes parts for the banjo and Hawaiian guitar.
