On Auden. 4/4. Peter Porter believes one particular area of WH Auden's achievement has been undervalued: his plays and libretti. He looks at The Dog beneath the Skin, the play Auden wrote with Christopher Isherwood , and the libretto he wrote for Stravinsky's The Rake's Progress, and argues that, as well as writing some of the finest lyric poetry, these works guarantee his place among the finest dramatic writers of the 20th century.
