1/2. Entertainment broadcaster and biographer Michael Freedland recalls a dark period in Hollywood history when the House Un-
American Activities Committee
(HUAC) targeted actors, writers, directors and producers whom it deemed to be Communist Party members and therefore a serious threat to American society.
From 1947 until the early 50s, the committee set out to purge Hollywood of these so-called subversives, many of whom were forced to quit their professions or work under assumed names. The programme features soundtrack clips and input from Theodore Bikel , Lee Grant , Artie Shaw , Larry Adler and many others, including archive interviews with Arthur Miller and Elia Kazan.
