Lifelines in Medicine

3: The Detectives
In this final programme of the current series, Tony Van den Bergh looks at the controversial role of medicine's detectives - the doctors and scientists working on new screening techniques which can give early warning of disease or disorder even before the patient knows he is ill.
While recent advances offer obvious possibilities in more effective treatments, the costs involved - they can be very high - also raise important questions about general availability and priorities, and it is in this area that there is still a great deal of disagreement.
