Cheltenham Jazz Festival

on BBC Radio 3

In the first of two concerts from the festival, Geoffrey Smith introduces a double bill of two illustrious American saxophonists recorded in the Everyman Theatre. Johnny Griffin - described by The Times as "the supreme ballad player on tenor" - is accompanied by a British rhythm section comprising John Taylor (piano), Dave Green (bass) and Steve Arguelles (drums).
Jackie McLean 's rhythm section was all-American: pianist Cedar Walton , bassist David Williams and drummer
Victor Lewis. According to The
Guardian, "he played out the festival with wit and warmth."
