' The Boat Race-a Conflict of Styles '
G. 0. NICKALLS
The point about the Boat Race this year is that for the first time one of the crews will admittedly be rowing in the style that has been made famous by Jesus College , Cambridge, and the other will be rowing in the old orthodox style. Hitherto both crews have rowed orthodox. The situation is made even more interesting by the fact that Mr. Peter Haig Thomas , who has coached Cambridge to victory for the last eleven years, has left them this year because they want to row in the Fairbairn style (that is the. Jesus style), and is, coaching Oxford instead.
G. 0. Nickalls, who is giving the talk, is peculiarly well qualified to discuss the two styles. since he has rowed in both styles with first-class crews.
