When Honest to God appeared in 1963 the author, then Bishop of Woolwich, saw ' uncomfortable analogies ' with the religious scene of a hundred years ago. His foreboding was justified. The book raised a storm to match the liveliest debates of the 19th century - causing some people to wonder whether such honesty was Indeed the best policy.
