The Afternoon on Three

on BBC Radio 3

with Susan Sharpe.
1.00pm Opera Matinee Herodiade
Massenet's grand opera on the story of Salome, in a Vienna State Opera performance with Placido Domingo as the Baptist. Based on a short story by Flaubert, the opera retells the devastating biblical tale of Herod's erotic obsession with Salome, and her love for the captive John the Baptist. The final crucial player in the drama is
Herodias, Herod's second wife and (it emerges)
Salome's mother. It is this discovery that triggers the opera's tragic and bloody conclusion.
