Ars Nova was the title of a treatise by Philippe de Vitry , a fourteenth-century composer and theorist who was responsible for certain improvements in musical notation. Greater precision in the notation of rapid passages was brought about by the introduction of the minion, and rhe use of red and black notes made possible for the first time the accurate indication of subtle and complex rhythms.
