The clash between the ideas and culture the British took overseas and those they encountered is a recurring theme of Empire. Nowhere was this clash more dramatic than in Africa where the British were often baffled by African ways. British values, laws, and rituals seemed strange to Africans who adopted - or adapted - some and rejected others.
