Sir Arthur Benson Gray, senior surgeon at Graftondale Hospital, wins another round in his battle with his research-minded colleague Neil Isherwood when he appoints the newly qualified Philip Selwood as registrar. Selwood soon proves himself a brilliant surgeon, but when a patient dies, scandal and tragedy threaten to destroy his career.
