At the time they were composed and the first twelve of them made available through Walsh, the publisher, the organ concertos of Handel must have at once made an astonishing impression and quickly have become universally popular. And justly so for several reasons. They were, it is true, virtuoso pieces, written to exhibit technical brilliance, but were not too far beyond the powers of the average organist of that day-Walsh's sales were a guarantee of that. They were unquestionably of a secular character, which the organ works of Handel's contemporaries unquestionably were not ; and they were masterly pieces of music by the recognised master of them all.
