Sunday Feature: The Brancusi Trial

on BBC Radio 3

Using transcripts unearthed last year, John Mortimer tells the story of a landmark art trial: Brancusi v United States.
Constantin Brancusi is considered the father of modern sculpture. But 75 years ago, US Customs demanded 40 per cent duty on one of his sculptures, refusing to recognise it as a work of art (which would have been exempt from the tax), In the resulting trial, the court of law had to address that most elusive of questions - what is art? The court cast includes Ed Bishop , Jerry Harte , Stuart Milligan , Kerry Shale and Bob Sherman. Plus interviews with Matthew Gale of the Tate Gallery, 89-year-old Sidney Geist , biographer of Brancusi, artist Richard Wentworth and Ann Temkin of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Producer Margaret Renn
