BBC1 presents in six parts the compelling story of one man's search for his roots which became the most successful television series in American history when it was shown there a few weeks ago.

Kunta Kinte, captured by slave traders, endures the horrors of the long sea journey to America. After being sold to a tobacco farmer he makes the first of many attempts to escape, determined to retain his own identity.
