W. C. Fields' long career as a vaudeville comedian came to a boozy and raucous end in the early 1920s. In 'desperation' he turned to Hollywood and thus began his incredible rise to fame and fortune - and death from loneliness and alcoholism. This film biography, based on the book by his last mistress, gives Rod Steiger a virtuoso role as the tragicomedian in his movie heyday.
