A dramatic chronicle of the entry of the nations of the British
Commonwealth into war
Devised and produced by Laurence Gilliam and A. L. Lloyd
One of the most moving broadcasts since radio began was Laurence Gilliam 's production, ' Twenty Years Ago', which, twenty years after the commencement of the first Great War, recorded the story of the march of events up to the great catastrophe. Nothing in it was more moving than the dramatisation of the speech by Sir Edward Grey , then Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, who spoke of the lights going out all over Europe.
Tonight Laurence Gilliam is to produce a programme, no less touching, dealing with events even more momentous-the outbreak of ,the second Great War. Listeners will hear how the challenge of war came, and the Empire's answer.
