Edward Stourton invites panel and guests to discuss the proposition "Education should be valued for its own sake, not because it supplies the workforce of the future." Many in the liberal arts establishment argue that the purpose of education is to broaden the mind. Government and industry have begun to take a different line, seeing education as a primary tool of industry.
