American-born pianist's syncopated stride piano style made him a favourite soloist at the BBC and earned him the nickname
"Radio's Wizard of the Piano". Worshipped by fans, he often had to be given polic protection as he left the stage door. He was also the man who gave a break to a young vocalist called Vera Lynn.
