James and Henry Durie, sons of old Lord Durrisdeer, had always hated each other. James the heir, the reckless, prodigal Master of Ballantrac, is mourned as dead after the Battle of Culloden. Henry now becomes the heir and marries the beautiful, impetuous Alison Graeme, who had been in love with the elder brother. After several years a messenger arrives from Paris to announce that the Master is still alive. Thereafter the exile makes heavy demands for money and causes the estate much impoverishment. One evening Mr. Mackellar, the land steward, sees a rowing boat put off from a smuggling vessel anchored in the bay. To his consternation it is the Master of Ballantrae who steps ashore. Mr. Mackellar, knowing what bitter feuds and complications wilt be caused by the Master's return, implores the exile to go back. The Master refuses.
