Another recital featuring Schubert's song cycles performed bytenor Ian Bostridge and pianist Julius Drake earlierthis month at London's Wigmore Hall. In Winterreise, as with Die Schone Mullerin , Schubert chooses poems by Wilhelm Muller. After finishing the set of 24 persistently gloomy and despondent songs he is supposed to have said to friends: "I will sing through a cycle of grisly songs for you. I am anxious to know what you will say about them. They have affected me more than has been the case with any other songs." Introduced by Stephanie Hughes.
