We take visiting for granted, but some journeys are significant, even dramatic.
2: A Mother for Malcolm
MALCOLM DUNFORD, a Yorkshire coal miner, never knew his mother.
From the age of ten months he was brought up by foster parents. He's 38 happily married with two children of his own. But he's always speculated about his mother was - she even alive or dead? Then he met a man with the same name as his - and discovered that his mother, Hilda, was alive and. well, and living in Scotland. At 72, she still remembered - every, single day - the baby boy she had been forced, by her parents and employers, to hand over, to foster parents. Malcolm and Hilda arranged to meet. But both were frightened of the moment - would there be guilt and recriminations? Would they even like each other? We travelled with Hilda - and waited with Malcolm.
