The Mighty Continent

on BBC One London

A View of Europe in the Twentieth Century
A television history in 13 parts Written and narrated by John Terraine with personal comments by Peter Ustinov
12: A Certain Amount of Violence Belief in good intentions and corresponding hopes were dashed in 1956 - a year of violence inside the Mighty Continent. The Soviet Union imposed her will harshly on Poland and Hungary; Britain and France entered the trauma of Suez. Afterwards Western Europe drew in upon herself, forming EEC, the Common Market. Britain did not join at first, and when she tried to, found her way blocked by de Gaulle , who had returned to power.
In spite of all, affluence now came to Europe, and with it, in the 60s, a new unrest, constantly expressed in slogans and sayings of the New Left. ' Revolution is the festival of the oppressed ' ... ' Insurrectional activity is today the number one political activity ' , .. ' That a certain amount of violence will take place is inevitable.'
