Vietnam Notebook

on BBC Radio 2

1/2. War correspondent
Michael Nicholson presents a personal history of the Vietnam War, to mark the 30th anniversary of the fall of Saigon. As well as his own memories of reporting on the conflict, he draws on the first-hand experiences of journalists, writers, photographers, camera operators and sound recordists, to recall in graphic detail the horrors, privations, and also the comradeship and humour of war. He begins at the end, with his own escape from Saigon, and then looks at how it all began, and at the civil unrest in the US and elsewhere that followed the notorious My Lai massacre in 1968, when US troops killed hundreds of innocent civilians. Contributions are from Max Hastings , Sandy Gall , John Tidmarsh , John Lawrence , Julian Pettifer , Nat Gibson and Martin Bell. Producer Adam Fowler
