Revolutionary Situations

on BBC Radio 3

James Joll , Stevenson Professor of International History at London University, gives a shortened version of a lecture he delivered to the Anglo-American Historical Conference in London last July.
When Louis XVI said of the French Revolution ' It's a revolt,' the Due de Lioncourt replied ' No, sire, it's a revolution.' Professor Joll looks at some historical examples since 1789 to see how we can distinguish revolutionary situations from riots and demonstrations.
